There are more than 300 metabolic reactions, chromium, magnesium, zinc and selenium are three. They help block the harsh effects of free radicals, generate protein synthesis, help control energy production and storage, safeguard genetic material (ex: DNA and RNA) and shield the mitochondria- the cells’ energy centers. You can actually take in plenty of these vital minerals if they eat enough calories. Many athletes may have mineral shortage due to extreme losses in sweat and urine.

Chromium, magnesium , selenium and zinc supplements

Stella Volpe from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia studied literature on minerals as performance-enhancing supplements.

Chromium: is useless for weight loss, but may help blood sugar control.
Magnesium- may fuel red blood cell production and improves the blood flow. On the other hand, magnesium supplements do not enhance exercise because the extreme exercise can cause zinc reduction, which could theoretically interfere with the production of testosterone and thyroid hormone.

Selenium – is an antioxidant that could safeguard cellular energy systems during extreme exercise but it did not seem to enhance endurance performance or speed recovery.

Zinc – One study revealed that zinc supplements enhanced performance and prevented hormone reduction in intensely training athletes.
