According to experts, people who lack sleep tend to eat more snacks during the day. Sleep loss is linked to obesity – scientists aren’t exactly sure why. Arlet Nedeltcheva and colleagues from the University of Chicago discovered that a person’s appetite and food consumption from snacks amplified more following sleep deprivation 5.5 hours of sleep per night than a normal amount of sleep (8.5 hours). About 11 middle-aged adults slept at a sleep laboratory for two weeks and ate delicious tasting food. Throughout their stay, they took both long and short sleeps.
Lack of Sleep Causes Obesity
Scientists also discovered that sleep duration did not affect the participant’s caloric intake during meals. On the other hand, pea-pie ate a total of 221 more calories and 4% more carbohydrates daily from snacks after sleep deprivation. Energy expenditure (metabolism plus physical activity) remained the same on both long and short sleep nights. Results from this study has proven that lack of sleep causes obesity because we tend to eat greater quantities of snacks when we lack sufficient amount sleep.
