Every guy who’s hitting the gym five times a week has a goal of getting bigger, faster, and stronger. Well, Medicine Science Sports Exercise Journal recently published an article done by Australian researchers proving spending less time in the gym will give you more bang for its buck compared to your average routine.
Although, everyone knows muscle contracts concentrically (when muscles shorten) and eccentrically (when muscles lengthen), not many people know during concentric contraction, forces decrease as velocity increases and during eccentric contraction, forces increase as velocity increases.(aka “negative movement”)
Australian researchers found muscle damage or DOMS (Delayed onset muscle soreness) was greater on high speed eccentric training than slow speed eccentric training which is responsible for the terrible soreness after your intense workout and also for making you bigger, faster, and stronger.
Now, we are not telling you to drop the weight down on your chest during your bench press or throw your dumbbells on the floor during your bicep curls. Just speed up your eccentric movement by half a second or even a full second but in controlled movement with good form.
