Literature written by Genevieve Buckland from the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain and colleagues discovered twenty-one studies that observed the connection between obesity and the Mediterranean diet.

Does dieting stop weight gain?

Only half the studies proved that people on this particular diet were less likely to be obese. However, no study proved that the Mediterranean diet endorsed weight gain. As a matter of fact, in long-term studies, dieters who participated in this study were twenty-nine percent less likely to become obese. Cross-sectional studies viewed a 51% decreased risk for becoming overweight or obese. Many intervention studies viewed weight losses of more than thirty pounds.

This diet may stop weight gain because of its low energy density, low glycemic load and high water substance. This diet is low in saturated and trans fats and high in monounsaturated fats. This may have health benefits.
